Wednesday's severe storms spawn tornado in Alberta

Thursday, July 14, 2016, 5:44 PM - The endless severe weather that's been impacting the Prairies spawned a tornado for Alberta's Stettler County on Wednesday.

A tornado warning was issued for the area Wednesday afternoon and the twister was spotted touching down around 2:30 p.m. local time.

"A brief tornado was observed approximately 3 km northeast of Ediang, Alberta," says Environment Canada. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) received multiple reports and photos of a funnel cloud in the area, and one observer reported that the tornado touched down for a brief period of time."

There were no reports of damage and therefore, the tornado was given a rating of EF0 on the enhanced Fujita scale.

"This was considered a landspout tornado that was generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms," EC explains. "Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous as they can topple trees, damage roofs, or toss debris a short distance."

The tornado was confirmed a day after flash flooding left several Calgarians stranded during the evening commute Tuesday. The risk for more heavy and flooding rains persists into the weekend.

Rain is expected to continue through to Saturday for the Canmore and Kananaskis regions, tapering by Saturday evening. The greatest threats with these storms will be heavy rain, strong winds and small hail.

"An upper low and convergence west of Calgary poses a flooding risk through Saturday morning where locally 8- mm of rain is possible with embedded convection," says Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton. "The heavy rain develops Friday west northwest of Calgary and continues through Saturday morning, tapering into the afternoon and evening hours."
