Luxuriant Growth of Spanish Moss

1223 views Jon Van Loon May 14, 2017 Longboat Key, FL, United States Date shot: February 25, 2015

Spanish moss is not a moss at all, in fact it is an epiphite that hangs on tree branches and has very tiny flowers. It is native to the tropical and subtropical Americas, growing as far north as southern Virginia. Although it does not penetrate the tree tissue it can hinder its growth when dense as in this photo by diminishing the trees exposure to the sun.
