Migrating whales return to B.C. waters. Here's how you can see them safely
The Pacific Rim Whale Festival kicks off in Tofino celebrating the return of migrant whales who will inhabit these waters until the fall. The Weather Network's Mia Gordon spots some whales and reports from the festival.
Every year, Tofino and Ucluelet on Vancouver Island come alive in the spring, and that is because migrant whales make their way back to their feeding grounds off the coast of British Columbia.
As the herring spawns each March, grey and humpback whales that spent the winter in Mexico and Hawaii make their way back to Vancouver Island, some of which will stick around until they make the return south in October.
To celebrate the occasion, the districts come together to host the annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival. The event, which was founded in 1986, is a week-long celebration that includes art, music, and educational events all about whales.
