Roller coaster event: Fredericton wakes up to frost, but summer set to return

Temperature swings aren't unusual in the fall.

Fredericton had the latest start of the "chilly season" on record.

The last time the temperature dipped below the freezing mark in the city was on May 10, 2023, but residents woke up to a temperature of -2.5°C Tuesday morning.

That replaces October 22, 2005, the previous record-holder of the latest start to Fredericton's chilly weather season.

"While Tuesday's below-freezing temperature is a sign of things to come, fall is a season of roller coaster temperatures," says Weather Network meteorologist Matt Grinter.

"The cold temperatures will feel like a thing of the past when temperatures rise to the high teens, and even 20°C, Wednesday to Saturday."

The conditions are courtesy of a high-pressure system over the southeastern United States that will bring warm air into much of the Maritimes, pushing daytime highs around 10 degrees above seasonal.
