IN PHOTOS: Prairie skies crackle with storms, tornado warnings

The Canada Day long weekend was a wild one for parts of the Prairies

The Prairies had more than their fair share of severe storms this past long weekend. Saskatchewan, in particular, saw an impressive severe weather outbreak, with at least two tornadoes confirmed on Saturday, and another suspected on Monday.

Earlier in the weekend a single storm was responsible for two tornadoes that moved through the Murray Doell Campground area within Meadow Lake Provincial Park, not far from the border with Albert.

The first, some 15 km northwest of the community of Goodsoil, resulted in several trailers damaged by fallen trees, one trailer rolled, and several small structures rolled or damaged. Environment Canada rated that tornado an EF-1, with winds up to 175 km/h.

A second tornado, rated EF-0 with winds up to 130 km/h, took a more southerly track, with tree damage reported.

Strong winds, downpours and frequent lightning were widespread for much of Saskatchewan on Canada Day. At one point, fans at the CFL game at Mosaic Stadium in Regina were forced to take shelter while the game was suspended as a warned thunderstorm passed by.
