Snow will return to Calgary after eastern Prairies contends with wintry mess

With snow and winds making for more problematic snow on the eastern Prairies on Friday, similar wintry weather will push back into southern Alberta, including Calgary, on Saturday

The wintry wallop on the Prairies will continue Friday, with most of the focus on the eastern sections.

Some communities, including the city of Winnipeg, Man., could see 15-25 cm of snowfall through Friday. This snowfall will continue to significantly hamper travel throughout the region on Friday. In fact, there have been reported road closures in parts of Manitoba.

Edmonton, Alta., received 14.4 cm of snow on Thursday, its highest, single-day total of the spring so far, even surpassing its largest winter total in a 24-hour period (10.6 cm on Jan. 30). The city has also seen significant road closures as a result.

Meanwhile, attention for winter weather will then turn to Calgary, Alta., and other southern Alberta locales on Saturday, thanks to the return of Arctic air that will create some upsloping snow. As much as 5-10 cm of snowfall could fall, so expect some travel difficulties.

Stay aware of highway conditions before heading out, and keep an eye on weather alerts in your area.

Friday: Snow, blowing snow an issue for eastern Prairies

A clipper system that formed over central Alberta will trek east on Friday, leaving behind a swath of snow across Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, and down toward Winnipeg.

Prairies Friday morning precipitation forecast

Expect snowfall to continue for Alberta and Saskatchewan into Friday morning, with the heaviest snow ending during the overnight hours. By Friday morning, snow will taper to a wintry mix for central Alberta.

Winnipeg will continue to see heavy snowfall Friday morning, which will linger across the region throughout the day. Forecasters expect 15-25 cm of snow to fall in the city, affecting travel for all major routes in the region.

Prairies additional snowfall Friday to Saturday

Blowing snow will be a moderate concern for southern Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan on Friday, with northerly gusts of 50 km/h.

Saturday: Snow makes a return to Calgary

Also, the return of an Arctic flow will trigger some upsloping snow across southern Alberta on Saturday.

Calgary sat out the previous storm but not this time. Most of the city will likely see 5-10 cm of snow. Closer to the Rockies, however, 10-20 cm of snowfall is expected for Canmore and Banff, impacting the travel for weekend skiing.

Prairies precipitation forecast Saturday afternoon

Colder-than-normal temperatures are spreading south, and will continue through the weekend and most of next week. After the snowstorm in the short range, quieter weather is expected this weekend through early next week. No major storms are in sight.
