Soak up the sun: Maritimes soon to see driest stretch of 2024

Sunshine reigns over the East Coast through this weekend as a ridge of high pressure makes itself at home

It’s not always bad news when weather is in the headlines! Parts of the Maritimes are on track to record the year’s driest stretch of weather through next week.

The lack of precipitation will be accompanied by sunshine and above-seasonal temperatures. Take full advantage of the placid weather before more autumnal conditions return before long.

Eastern Canada upper level ridge

An upper-level ridge parked over the eastern half of Canada is responsible for the relative lack of active weather across the Maritimes. Ridges foster sinking air, which warms up and dries out as it descends toward the ground.

This ridge isn't in any hurry to scoot out of the area. As a result, we’re in the midst of warmer-than-seasonal temperatures and dry conditions throughout the Maritimes.

Halifax dry streak

How dry are things looking?

Halifax’s longest streak without measurable precipitation was seven days back around the start of this month. We could soon see an eight-day stretch of dry weather through next week if the current forecast holds.

The sunshine and clear skies should provide excellent conditions to view Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS in the western sky after sunset.

Halifax temperature trends

The dry, sunny weather will be accompanied by above-seasonal temperatures through the weekend.

A seasonal temperature in Halifax for the middle of October comes in around 13°C. The city is on pace to hit the 20-degree mark this weekend as the ridge peaks in strength.
